About Kenya Curling Federation

Curling, a sport traditionally associated with cold climates, has a rather unusual and unexpected history in Kenya. Known for its savannahs, wildlife, and diverse culture, Kenya isn’t typically the first country that comes to mind when thinking about curling. However, in recent years, the sport has gained popularity and found a niche following in this East African nation.

The introduction of curling to Kenya can be attributed to the efforts of a small group of enthusiastic individuals led by the Curling President Laventa Oguta who was captivated by the sport while watching it during the Winter Olympics. Inspired by the strategic gameplay and unique physical demands of curling, we embarked on a mission to bring the sport to our homeland.

The first curling facility in Kenya was established in the capital city of Nairobi. The rink, although modest in size, provided a platform for aspiring curlers to learn and practice the sport. Initially, participation was limited to a handful of passionate individuals, but as word spread and curiosity grew, more Kenyans became interested in curling. The sport began to attract attention from various communities, schools, and sports clubs across the country.

Over time, Kenyan curlers formed their own national association to oversee the development and organization of the sport. Local tournaments and leagues were established, allowing players to showcase their skills and compete for national recognition. The Kenyan Curling Federation, in collaboration with international curling bodies, worked towards spreading awareness and fostering relationships with other curling nations.

While still a niche sport in Kenya, curling has made significant strides in recent years. The national team, known as the “Safari Sweepers,” has participated in regional competitions and even managed to qualify for international events. The success of the Safari Sweepers has inspired a new generation of Kenyan curlers and created a sense of pride within the country’s sporting community.

The story of curling in Kenya is a testament to the power of passion, determination, and adaptability. Against all odds, a sport traditionally associated with icy landscapes has found a place in the heart of East Africa. As the popularity of curling continues to grow in Kenya, it serves as a reminder that sports have the ability to transcend cultural boundaries and bring people together, even in the most unexpected of places.
