Curling Takes Root in Over 10 Counties Across Kenya

Curling—a sport long associated with icy arenas in North America and Europe—is now finding a home right here in Kenya. Despite the country’s tropical climate and the absence of ice rinks, the Kenya Curling Federation (KCF) has introduced curling to over 10 counties, with the numbers steadily growing each month.

With the lack of ice facilities posing a major challenge, KCF has adopted floor curling as the primary training and playing format. This innovative version of the game uses smooth indoor surfaces and modified equipment, allowing players to learn the fundamentals, practice strategy, and experience the thrill of curling—without the ice.

“We may not have ice, but we have the passion and the determination. Floor curling is giving us a way to develop our teams, educate communities, and build a strong foundation for the sport,” says a KCF Secretary General

Curling Expands Across the Nation

The federation’s outreach programs have already seen teams form in counties such as Nairobi, Narok, Meru, Kiambu, Kisumu, Mombasa, Uasin Gishu, Kakamega, Nakuru, Machakos, Embu, and Nyeri—just to name a few. Schools, universities, and community centers are becoming new hubs for curling activities.

Every weekend, local groups gather in halls, gyms, and multipurpose sports grounds to train, compete, and recruit new talent.

National Recruitment Drive Underway

The Kenya Curling Federation is currently running a nationwide recruitment drive to bring more players, coaches, and volunteers into the sport. By partnering with schools, county governments, and youth organizations, the Federation aims to introduce curling to all 47 counties over the next three years.

Whether you’re an athlete looking for a new challenge, a sports enthusiast, or someone simply curious, now is the perfect time to join the curling movement in Kenya.

Upcoming Competitions and National Team Selection

As part of its strategy to build a competitive curling culture, the Kenya Curling Federation has lined up several county tournaments and friendly matches throughout the year. These events are also being used to scout and select players for the national team.

Some of the major upcoming events include:

  • Narok Curling Cup– 4th July 2025
  • Kiambu County Curling Championship– 4th July 2025
  • Meru–Embu Counties Curling Friendly Championship– 2nd July 2025
  • National Selection Curling Championship-24th July 2025

These tournaments will not only showcase the talent emerging across the country but also serve as platforms to refine skills, grow public interest, and strengthen Team Kenya.

Overcoming Challenges

Like many emerging sports in Kenya, curling faces obstacles:

  • Lack of dedicated equipment
  • No ice facilities
  • Limited awareness

Yet, the resilience of our curling community has been inspiring. Through improvisation, partnerships, and pure passion, KCF continues to push the sport forward, step by step.
